Spotlight on Dr. Thomas Huckaba

Associate Professor, Biology
Xavier University of Louisiana

Dr. Huckaba is currently co-authoring an open-source introductory Biology series. Notice that it is not merely an “e-text” where students are asked to read pages 16-32 online instead of in a hard copy book. No, he and his team are making sure the students engage with the concepts and material from the beginning through projects and problems posed to them. This multi-media learning also features expert lectures, references and resources from women and minority scholars to ensure maximum inclusivity. Dr. Huckaba hopes to have the series ready next year sometime. We’ll be checking back with you in 2019 Dr. Huckaba! For more information, email thuckaba@xula.edu.

XULA Librarian in SPARC OER program

The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Coalition (SPARC) is a national alliance composed of libraries from major universities across the U.S. and Canada “…committed to making Open the default for research and education.” SPARC sponsors nationwide initiatives in Open Access, Open Data, and Open Educational Resources (OER). SPARC also has alliances around the world: SPARC Japan, SPARC Europe, and the newly-launched SPARC Africa.

The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program, now in its second year, has accepted Xavier University of Louisiana librarian, Johannah White, into this year’s cohort. Development of the knowledge, skills, and connections necessary to lead and support OER locally and nationally are program goals. The two-semester sequence will result in the planning and launch of a local OER project.
